Staycation Style: What to Wear During a UK Getaway
A staycation in the UK, especially in picturesque locations, is the perfect way to relax and explore without the hassle of international travel. But just because you’re staying local doesn’t mean you shouldn’t dress to impress! We spoke to Kate Hiscox of WearsMyMoney to help us compile a fun and helpful guide on what to wear during your staycations this summer.
Kate’s favourite destination in the UK to holiday:
“I love Northumberland. It’s got loads of places to visit, tons of castles, lots of vast empty beaches, scenery and is very dog friendly, which is crucial when holidaying at home.”
1. Coastal Casual for Daytime Adventures
Seaside Strolls:
Embrace the nautical vibe with a classic Breton striped top - we love the Munthe Jikolaz top. Finish off the look and pair it with some wide leg jeans such as our best selling Paige Anessa. If it's lovely and warm, style your tee back with some denim shorts. A favourite here with us at The Dressing Room are the Agolde Stella Shorts. Layer up your look with a light knit for those breezy seaside walks. The American Vintage Damsville Jumpers are perfect for popping on to layer up and keep off the sea breeze. If you’re looking for comfortable footwear, look no further than a pair of Veja trainers. They’ll keep your feet happy all day, making them perfect for long walks on your UK Staycation.
Exploring Villages:
If you’ll be out and about exploring the wonderful local villages, a dress is a must! A lightweight and easy to style midi dress is perfect for wandering through quaint villages, seeing the sights, and enjoying afternoon teas. We love Rails for their laid back yet elevated dresses - especially the Iona dress featuring stripes to tie in with the coastal theme!
Comfortable footwear is a necessity for exploring, opt for something open toe such as the Woden Line Sandal. These feature a three layered Natural Soft footbed for the ultimate comfort. The British weather can be unpredictable, so be sure to pack some lighter knits and jackets. If you’re searching for a chic rain mac, Tanta Rainwear jacket is the answer.
Kates recommendations of great places to visit in Northumberland:
“In Northumberland, Bamburgh and the surrounding area are top of the list to visit. Eat at the Jolly Fisherman in Craster and then walk to Dunstanburgh castle afterwards.”
2. Beach Ready for Fun in the Sun
Beach Days:
The UK has some wonderful beaches, and when the sun is out it’s definitely worth making the most of them! You can’t go wrong with a stylish swimsuit that makes you look and feel fabulous. We are big fans of the Sorbet Island one pieces here, they’re cut in flattering silhouettes and are made from a gorgeous crinkle fabrication.
Flowy kaftans or sarongs are perfect for lounging on the sand (or pebbles!) or popping down to the beach cafe to grab a bite to eat. We love the lightweight and easy dresses from Handprint Dream Apparel. They’re perfect to pop on at the beach, and double as a fab day dress! A beach day isn’t complete without a beach bag - we love The Somewhere Co cheeky totes for keeping your belongings safe from sand and water. Don’t forget your Ipanema flip-flops and Beach Powder for that pesky sand!
Kate’s top tip when packing for your holiday:
“I know it’s a pain, but trying on all your outfits before you pack and making sure they all mix and match easily avoids overpacking. I think about what I will be doing and where I will be going and work out what I plan on wearing day by day, so I don’t throw in that random dress I haven’t worn in years ‘just in case.”
3. Evening Elegance for Dining Out
Coastal Dining:
A flowy maxi dress is perfect for a relaxed yet elegant dinner by the sea. Greek Archaic Kori have some fabulously chic dresses perfect for dressing up. Layer up your look with golden jewels from Anna Beck for an elevated look. Finish off your outfit by adding some Castaner espadrilles, and a handy ALEO leather handbag to hold all of your evening essentials. If you’re by the sea, a jacket is always handy. You can’t go wrong with a denim jacket from Paige.
Dressier Evenings:
A pair of elevated denim jeans teamed with a feminine blouse is a fail-safe option for evenings out. We love Scandi brand Dea Kudibal for their feminine blouses, they’re a perfect way to add some luxe to your holiday wardrobe. Team with some new season Frame denim, and you’re all set! To keep off the evening chill and keep with the Scandi theme, slip on a trench from Meotine and some Shoe The Bear Saga ankle boots for a match made in heaven.
4. Adventure Ready for Hiking and Exploring
Walking Trails:
No UK holiday is complete without a hike! Opt for comfortable clothing and layers that can easily be added or removed. Try our wardrobe staple Commando leggings for maximum comfort and mobility while you’re walking. Alternatively, choose cargos for an easy to style ‘cooler’ trouser. We love the Citizens of Humanity Marcelle Pants. American Vintage t-shirts are made from cotton meaning they’re super breathable and perfect for long hikes. These can easily be layered up with a Rainbow Colours sweatshirt for added warmth. A waterproof jacket is a must, so don’t forget your Tanta Rainwear! A Woden boot is perfect for long walks, and they’re waterproof so will see you through all weathers. Like the Woden sandals, these boots also feature an incredibly soft footbed for all day long comfort.
